Uses of magnesium sulphate

The administration of magnesium sulphate may be indicated in a variety of clinical situations including:

  • cardiac arrest
    • refractory ventricular fibrillation in the presence of suspected hypomagnesaemia e.g. patients on potassium losing diuretics
    • refractory ventricular tachycardia in the presence of suspected hypomagnesaemia
  • broad complex tachycardias in the presence of hypokalaemia (potassium less than 4.0 mmol/l)
  • eclampsia
  • severe asthma
