Clavinulanic acid
This is an inhibitor of penicillinase. It is used in combination with amoxycillin, in the preparation coamoxiclav, in the treatment of bacteria that are usually sensitive to amoxycillin, but produce penicillinase.
Clavinulanic acid is not of use in bacterial infection where resistance to penicillin is not mediated via penicillinase eg cloxacillin-resistant staphylococci, penicillin-resistant pneumococci.
