a variety of techniques have been described for the treatment of digital mucoid cysts
range from puncture, aspiration and drainage, unroofing with electrodessication, injection therapy with steroids or sclerosing alcohol, curettage and compression, multiple needling and drainage, and simple surgical excision
recurrence rates vary according to the specific management of these lesions
lower recurrence rates have been observed with complete surgical excision including deep tissue and bone with the addition of skin flaps for closure of the primary defect
recurrences as high as 50% have also been documented for treatment using puncture and drainage
surgical intervention, which incorporates osseous and soft tissue resection, has shown a recurrence rate as low as 20%
