This is a condition of extreme self neglect that generally affects people who live alone. The incidence of this condition is approximately 0.5 per 1000 population. About 50% of people affected by this condition have significant psychopathology. Physical illness is commonly associated. The condition may worsen on admission to hospital. Often the individuals affected are of above average intelligence.
