This is the commonest benign lesion of bone.
It is caused by the failure of a nest of fibrous tissue to calcify.
Non-ossifying fibromas are usually diagnosed incidentally during childhood.
The commonest sites are the metaphyses of long bones.
Treatment is usually unnecessary because healing occurs spontaneously over a period of several years. If a pathological fracture occurs across an exceptionally large lesion then curettage and bone grafting is required.
