Priorities

Authoring team

The primary aim of first aid is to protect the life of the victim without endangering the life of those administering the assistance.

Assess the most critical injury or casualty calmly while reassuring anyone who is responsive.

Give immediate treatment whenever possible, maintaining the position of the injured person(s) unless there is imminent danger from risks such as fire or electricity.

If bystanders are present, send them to telephone for an ambulance and, if required, other emergency services.

It is important to convey certain information :

  • precise location of the accident
  • number of casualties
  • type of injury
  • need for specialised equipment, for example, a defibrillator
