GP unit delivery (contraindications)

Contraindications to delivery in a GP unit include:

  • previous caesarian section
  • prevous retained placenta
  • intra-uterine growth retardation
  • diabetes or other major maternal illness
  • multiple pregnancy
  • pelvic injury
  • previous gynaecological operations such as hysterotomy, myomectomy, cone biopsy

Relative contraindications include:

  • history of recurrent miscarriages
  • infertility treatment
  • young primagravida (less than 18 years old) should be considered for consultant unit booking - these women are at an increased risk of conditions such as dysfunctional labour and for requirement of epidural analgesia
  • small multigravida (less than 150 cm tall)
  • fifth or more baby
  • multigravida over 40 years of age
