Radical radiotherapy involves irradiation of the chest wall, and of lymph nodes in the axillary, and possibly, the supraclavicular and internal mammary groups.
It may be used after conservative surgery irrespective of the suggestion of disseminated disease, in order to obtain local control.
Used on its own however radiotherapy is poor at preventing local recurrence such that only 30% of patients treated with radiotherapy alone remain free of local disease at death.
Combined with systemic treatment however radiotherapy is more effective with an initial response of 80%.
