The Rose-Waaler reaction measures the ability of rheumatoid factor to agglutinate sheep erythrocytes that have been coated with rabbit IgG directed against sheep erythrocytes. IgM antibodies are much more effective at agglutinating antigen coated erythrocytes than IgG, and hence IgG is poorly measured by this test. IgG rheumatoid factor can be more effectively measured by other techniques such as radio-immune assay.
