Sinus
The word sinus has many medical and surgical meanings:
- a hollow cavity within bone e.g. the paranasal sinuses of the skull - the sinuses the layperson most commonly refers to with respect to 'sinusitis'
- a dilated blood vessel, usually for venous blood e.g. the dural sinuses of the skull
- a dilatation, usually fusiform, in a tubular organ or tissue e.g. the carotid sinus, the sinus venosus of the embryonic heart
- a passage, frequently infected, leading from the interior of the body to junction with a hollow viscus or the skin
- an abbreviation for the sinoatrial node of the heart, giving rise to phrases such as sinus arrhythmia
