Agenda
Obesity in primary care
An overview of the assessment and management of obesity in primary care. This session will consider the current context, including stigma and person-centred communication. We outline newer medications and potential implications for the future.
Cardiorenal metabolic syndrome
This session will explore the overlap between diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease and obesity and the need to consider them together. We review the pathophysiology, early recognition and practical approaches to integrated risk reduction in primary care, along with improving outcomes.
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)
We introduce avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) as a distinct eating disorder and help differentiate it from similar presentations. The session will aim to help you understand the anxiety and sensory sensitivity that may be experienced and strategies to support, assess, manage and consider when to refer.
Testicular torsion
Testicular torsion is a urological emergency caused by the twisting of the testicle on the spermatic cord, leading to constriction of the vascular supply, time-sensitive ischaemia or necrosis of testicular tissue. Failure to make the diagnosis can lead to loss of the testicle and potential medico-legal issues. This presentation advises on the best ways of ensuring the diagnosis is never missed.
Tremor
Tremor is an involuntary rhythmic oscillation of one or more body parts, mediated by alternating contractions of reciprocally acting muscles and commonly affects the upper extremities but can also affect the head, chin, voice, or legs. If severe, a tremor may significantly impair activities of daily living or occupation, and may lead to embarrassment and social withdrawal. In this presentation, we look at the common types of tremor seen in primary care, their assessment and treatment options.
Syphilis
Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted infection, with over 8 million cases worldwide. Although there are four stages of syphilis infection, the primary and secondary stages are the earliest, symptomatic stages and are therefore indicators of incident infection. We look at how to recognise its symptoms, how to test and treat it and what the prognosis is for each stage.
