Agenda
Ear problems in children
Here we review the latest guidelines and discuss common paediatric conditions such as acute otitis media and otitis media with effusion, along with rarer conditions such as chronic suppurative otitis media, aural perichondritis and haematomas in the pinna.
Hearing loss
In this section we focus on hearing loss, including who needs an immediate referral, why certain patients with hearing loss who are of Chinese or Southeast Asian family origin need an urgent 2-week referral, the link between hearing loss and dementia and how we can make our practices more hearing loss friendly.
Maternal and child nutrition
We review the new NICE guideline on maternal and child nutrition and focus on those areas that apply most to us working in primary care. We discuss updates on supplementation, healthy eating and weight management during pregnancy, and breastfeeding support.
Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy
This session covers the diagnostic criteria and initial assessment of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. It includes a discussion on assessing severity and when to suspect hyperemesis gravidarum, plus a review of primary care management, including lifestyle advice and pharmacological treatment options.
Dyspepsia in pregnancy
Here, we review the causes and impact of dyspepsia in pregnancy. This session also presents a stepwise approach to management.
Falls prevention
A discussion of the available guidelines for falls prevention and management, including some key questions to help assess risks of falls and a practical approach to the management of risk factors in primary care.
