Side effects
The prostaglandins or thromboxanes are important in:
- maintaining the integrity of the gastric mucosa
- primary haemostasis
- renal function and blood-pressure control
Long-term aspirin therapy may damage any of these systems.
In addition, aspirin is normally contraindicated in children under the age of 12 years because of an association with Reye's syndrome.
