Signs of infective endocarditis include:

  • pyrexia
  • new or changing murmurs
  • signs of embolism
  • signs of heart failure
  • Osler's nodes, splinter haemorrhages, Janeway lesions
  • anaemia - normochromic, normocytic
  • the ESR is usually raised, though the WBC count is usually normal
  • splenomegaly - usually palpable after about 6 weeks of illness
  • clubbing may occur after 1-2 months
