Secondary erythrocytosis is often discovered incidentally during the course of investigations so that the primary features are those of the underlying disease.
The pathology is that of a single line disorder stemming from increased serum levels of erythropoietin or similar substances. Thus, haematological symptoms are those of erythrocytosis only.
