Disadvantages
- only a small part of the heart can be imaged at any one time (the beam is only about 1cm wide)
- difficult to elucidate relationships between different parts of the same structure - not appropriate for studying cardiac anatomy and ventricular function
- hard copies of M-mode traces should not be interpreted without reference to videotaped images
