A pregnancy in women with a repaired coarctation of the aorta may pose problems. In normal pregnancy aortic dimensions increase which may explain the increased risk of aneurysm formation and aortic rupture reported during pregnancy. Pregnancy should be postponed if blood pressure is sub-optimal or if MRI suggests aortic dilation. An MRI, if performed after the first trimester, is thought to be safe and particularly important in those with patch repairs.
