Selenium deficiency
The diagnosis of selenium deficiency is made on the basis of:
- blood or tissue selenium levels
- glutathione peroxidase activity of erythrocytes; correlates directly with selenium levels
Selenium deficiency is rare and occurs in two contexts:
- endemic deficiencies e.g. Keshan disease
- patients on TPN without selenium supplementation
