Inflammatory causes
The inflammatory causes of pleural effusion are dominated by the connective tissue diseases:
- systemic lupus erythematosis
- mixed connective tissue disease
- rheumatoid arthritis
Ten percent of patients with acute rheumatic fever have a pleural effusion.
