Fluid resuscitation

Fluid resuscitation is indicated for all patients with a major burn. Generally quoted thresholds for commencing intravenous fluids are burns greater than:

  • 10% of the total body surface area (TBSA) in children
  • 15% of TBSA in adults

A crystalloid such as Hartmann Solution is given in the first instance via two large bore peripheral cannulae. In the submenu are detailed:

  • one method of estimating fluid needs as a guide to the amount and rate of administration
  • monitoring the adequacy of resuscitation
  • choice of resuscitation fluid
  • problems with fluid resuscitation
