These are classified as:

  • spina bifida occulta or closed spina bifida: in this type of spina bifida there is nearly always a marker in the overlying skin - a dimple, patch of hair, or a naevus
  • spina bifida cystica or open spina bifida: in this type of spina bifida the meningeal sac and its contents protrude through the defect with no skin covering.
