Microbiological investigations are worthwhile as it may be impossible to distinguish tinea from other causes of onycholysis and although uncommon, systemic treatment may have side effects.

Clippings and scrapings are best taken from the crumbly nail tissue (not dessicated) using a scalpel blade or a curette.
