Burnett's syndrome

Authoring team

Burnett's syndrome is far-advanced milk-alkali syndrome and due to long-standing calcium and alkali ingestion. It is characterised by severe hypercalcaemia, irreversible renal failure, and phosphate retention. There may be ectopic calcification.

The patient is treated by withdrawal of excessive calcium and alkali intake. This may result in some improvement, but the patient generally requires dialysis or renal transplantation.
