Aetiology

It is important to note that the vast majority of delinquents fall within the normal range of physical and mental health.

Theories include:

• delinquent subcultures developing in order to counteract the pressures that deny them status and respect
• control theory, which assumes that youth acts in a selfish, assertive, hedonistic and thus delinquent ways unless they are subjected to controlling influences
