Mortality rates in patients with diabetes mellitus are greater than those in the general population. Excess mortality in insulin-dependent diabetes is due principally to increased renal disease, and in non-insulin-dependent diabetes due to increased cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease.
There is evidence supporting that the rate of development of complications, and mortality, are reduced with good diabetic control.
