The vast majority of oral cavity tumours are malignant, of which 95% are squamous cell carcinomas. The remainder are malignant melanomas and salivary gland tumours.

The major risk factors for upper aerodigestive tract squamous cell cancer in the UK are tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption
