Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the supporting tissues of the tooth - the periodontium. It can lead to premature tooth loss.
Inflammation first causes a loss of the most superficial fibrous tissues attached between the root and the gingivae. Later, epithelial migration down the root surface produces a pocket below the gingival margin. The latter can become inaccessible to brushing.
The individual with peridontitis eventually becomes symptomatic: bone is resorbed, abscesses can form and the tooth loosens within its socket.
