  • mortality rate depends upon tumour size and site - up to 5% for large tumours

  • cause of death - damage to major blood vessels, e.g. anterior inferior cerebellar artery, postoperative cerebellar swelling

  • morbidity - facial nerve usually preserved in small tumours i.e. less than 2 cm, and in 20% of those with large tumours

  • difficulty in swallowing from X nerve damage is usually transient and needs no intervention
