Interferons work by diffusing to neighbouring cells and binding to a cell surface receptor. A signal is then transduced internally to host ribosomes which stops the production of viral messenger RNA by:

  • production of a peptide chain elongation inhibitor
  • activation of a enzyme which degrades RNA
  • production of an enzyme which disrupt transfer RNA
