Differential diagnosis

The differential diagnosis of acute pancreatitis includes:

  • acute myocardial infarction
  • cholangitis
  • cholecystitis
  • diabetic ketoacidosis
  • gastric outlet obstruction
  • intestinal infarction
  • pancreatic cancer
  • perforated peptic ulcer

Other causes of raised serum amylase are:

  • renal failure
  • macro-amylasaemia
  • diseases of the salivary glands
  • extra-pancreatic abdominal diseases associated with inflammation
    • e.g. - acute appendicitis, cholecystitis, intestinal obstruction or ischemia, peptic ulcer, and gynaecological diseases
