Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic corticosteroid. Its spectrum of activity - strong anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive action combined with negligible mineralocorticoid action - make it suitable for conditions where water retention is dangerous e.g. cerebral oedema.
It strongly suppresses ACTH secretion, used to advantage in the dexamethasone suppression tests.
