Dietary supplements are indicated if a patient is able to take an oral diet but is unable to eat sufficiently to sustain themselves. The principles are that they provide additional carbohydrate, protein, vitamins and minerals as required by the particular patient.

At their least sophisticated they include sandwiches or nuts between meals; they also include commercial preparations coming in liquid or powder form.

It is important to get advice from a dietician as to the appropriate supplement for any particular patient.
