Duodenal diverticulum

Authoring team

Duodenal diverticula usually arise on the mesenteric aspect of the descending duodenum within 2 cm of the bile duct orifice. Pseudodiverticula are the product of the scarring of chronic peptic ulceration. True diverticula may be congenital or acquired. In some individuals the duct empties directly into a diverticulum.

Normally, the diverticulae are innocuous, but occasionally, distortion of the duct entrance or obstruction by enterolith formation in the diverticulum produces symptoms.

Treatment is by choleduodenostomy.
