Blood indices
Blood tests in Crohn's may reveal the following:
- full blood count - anaemia due to blood loss and/or vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, increased platelet count which correlates with disease activity, leukocytosis.
- ESR - elevated
- elevated CRP: correlates with disease activity. Note that CRP is significantly higher in Crohn's disease than in ulcerative colitis.
- biochemistry - severe disease may result in
- hypokalaemia, hyponatraemia, and metabolic acidosis secondary to diarrhoea
- hypoalbuminaemia secondary to malabsorption
- abnormal liver function tests if there is associated chronic active hepatitis
