Liver diseases and conditions

Authoring team

Liver disease encompasses a broad range of conditions that damage the liver, preventing it from executing vital functions like digestion, toxin filtration, and energy storage.

Chronic liver issues typically follow a progressive path: initial inflammation (hepatitis) leads to scarring (fibrosis), which can advance to severe, permanent scarring known as cirrhosis, and ultimately culminate in life-threatening liver failure or liver cancer.
