Small intestinal lymphoma may be strongly suggested by barium studies. There may be ulceration, strictures, filling defects or fistulae. However, diagnosis can only be confirmed by laparotomy with excision of the affected segment and biopsy of adjacent nodes and liver. Coeliac disease should be considered.
Resection is followed by abdominal irradiation unless the lesion was small. If the patient has recurrent disease or persistent symptoms, chemotherapy is indicated.
