Laboratory findings
- excessive total body iron manifest as increased serum iron and/or hepatocellular iron
- mild erythrocytosis
- urine shows marked increase of uroporphyrin but only slight increase in coproporphyrin; may exhibit characteristic pink red fluorescence when illuminated with a Wood's lamp
- slight increase in coproporphyrin in stool
- increased plasma protoporphyrin
- liver function tests may be abnormal - elevated transaminase and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase levels (1)
