Diagnosis

The diagnosis of retroperitoneal fibrosis involves consideration of the following investigations:

  • intravenous urography shows bilateral hydronephrosis with drawing together of the ureters in the midline
  • the ESR and CRP are raised; also anaemia and uraemia
  • CT/MRI - reveals a peri-aortic mass
  • biopsy of retroperitoneal tissue at time of operation allows confirmation of diagnosis and exclusion of other pathologies such as malignancy
