Complications include:

  • hypoglycaemia - particularly important in young children, secondary to inhibition of gluconeogenesis, and typically occuring within six to thirty six hours of ingestion
  • aspiration pneumonia
  • hypothermia - alcohol reduces an individual's sensitivity to cold, and does not warm the body as popularly thought. In addition, collapse in a cold place can result in hypothermia.
