  • acute pyelonephritis
    • broad-spectrum cephalosporin or a quinolone (although quinolones are contraindicated in pregnancy)
  • acute prostatitis
    • a quinalone or trimethoprim - treat for 4/52
  • 'Lower' UTI
    • trimethoprim or cephalosporin or nitrofurantoin
      • trimethoprim should be avoided during the first trimester because theoretical teratogenic risk
      • nitrofurantoin may produce neonatal haemolysis if used at term. BNF states risk if used during third trimester
    • a short-course is generally adequate (e.g.3 days) for an uncomplicated UTI in women
