Increased activity of enzymes within the plasma may represent increased release. Usually, this is due to cellular damage which makes the plasma membrane permeable to cytoplasmic enzymes. For example, hepatocyte damage results in alanine aminotransferase release. More severe damage may disrupt mitochondria with release of aspartate aminotransferase.
