Poor prognostic factors
These include:
- pregnancy
- age < 3 years
- hypoglycaemia
- hyperparasitaemia (> 5% of red blood cells or 250,000 per microL)
- disseminated intravascular coagulation
- raised lactic acid (plasma or CSF)
- raised creatinine (> 265 micromol/L)
- fits, deep coma, absent corneal reflex, retinal haemorrhage, decerebate rigidity, pulmonary oedema
