  • hypnosis or unconsciousness - a sleep-like state in which there is unawareness of surroundings and suppression of reflexes
  • analgesia
  • muscle relaxation - depending on the type of surgery
  • easy reversibility of the induced state
  • maintenance of as near to normal physiology as possible
