These are becoming more common. They usually affect homosexual men; although women practising receptive anal intercourse are also at risk.

Pathogen
- anal lesions: herpes simplex, secondary syphilis
- proctitis: herpes simplex, Neisseria gonorrhoea, Chlamydia trachomatis, syphilis
- proctocolitis: Chlamydia trachomatis, Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter
In HIV-infected individuals, sexually transmitted enteric infections may involve a broader spectrum of organisms.
