Aetiology
- trisomies, in particular Down's, also 18 and 13 (although a low AFP is not as accurate in predicting Down's as a high AFP is in predicting spina bifida).
- a low AFP may be seen in mothers who have diabetes, with no implication of trisomy.
- overestimation of gestation
- above average maternal weight
- spontaneous abortion
- some molar pregnancies
- non-viable pregnancy
