  • CVS can be performed earlier than amniocentesis, before the pregnancy is obvious

  • if an abnormality is detected and termination of the pregnancy requested, this can be performed earlier in the pregnancy.

  • results are usually available within 20 days (compared with a month for amniocentesis); in the case of foetal chromosome analysis, results are available in 24 hours as the cells do not have to be cultured before analysis
