Upper urinary tract cancer

Authoring team

Upper tract urothelial tumours are traditionally treated by nephroureterectomy i.e. removal of kidney, ureter and a cuff of bladder that includes the ureteric orifice.

Removal of the ureter is advised even with tumour apparently confined to the kidney because of the multifocal nature of urothelial cancer, and the difficulty in monitoring for tumour in an isolated ureter.
