Premature birth may be iatrogenically induced for a variety of reasons, including:

  • pregnancy-induced proteinuric hypertension, for example pre-eclampsia or eclampsia
  • maternal renal disease or cardiac disease
  • intrauterine infection - particularly after premature rupture of membranes
  • antepartum haemorrhage
  • intrauterine growth retardation
