  • suppressing ovulation - mediated by inhibiting GnRH
  • altering the cervical mucus making it less penetrable by spermatozoa
  • interfering with transport of ova in the fallopian tube
  • inducing atrophic change in the endometrium so as not to be conducive to implantation
