Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause. Bromocriptine should not be used indiscriminately as hyperprolactinaemia should first be proven.

Simple observation may suffice if the woman is menstruating normally and serum prolactin levels are not raised. If in this case, the galactorrhoea is due to physical stimulation and has become socially embarrassing, inform the woman about the basis of the lactation, and encourage her to cease the stimulation.

Galactorrhoea due to the combined oral contraceptive pill is not a medical indication for an alternative form of contraception if the woman is otherwise asymptomatic.
